The Portishead Christmas Lights is run by volunteers. Each year local people from all walks of life give freely of their time and expertise to enhance the High Street area at Christmas time. This commitment continues throughout the year through regular meetings. Although the Christmas Lights receives an absolutely vital grant from Portishead Town Council, the majority of the £20,000 annual costs are met from local fundraising. Over the years many local groups have generously chosen to raise money in various ways for the Lights. This is much appreciated and has helped us to pursue a process of continual improvement.
Portishead Christmas Lights are put up, taken down and organised by 100 volunteers (approx!). In recent years there have been successful attempts to put on a bigger and better show than the previous year.
Lights at the top of St. Peter’s Church tower, new shops behind Lloyds Bank, and High Street extensions as far as Gordano School, Station Road, Harbour Road and Waitrose Piazza are all examples of improvments we have made in recent years.
The Portishead Christmas Lights now represent a ‘Golden Mile’ of festive illumination. The "Lights" Committee was thrilled to receive stunning photographs of the Lights taken by members of the Portishead Camera Club who heroically braved the cold to produce them. They have kindly allowed us to use these stunning photographs on the web site. To view the truly remarkable and beautiful slide show click here.
The Portishead Christmas Lights team help provide volunteer marshals at the Raft Race and the Carnival. Because we are good with ladders, we work with our friends Portishead in Bloom to put up summer banners in the High Street, and we put up and take down the bunting for the flower show.
